Things to do in and around Sudbury

Walks, museums, theatre and day trips - the best things to see and do in Sudbury and the nearby Stour Valley villages.

Walk the Sudbury water meadows

The water meadows beside the River Stour are among the oldest continuously grazed common lands in England. Easy paths run from the town centre past the Mill and out across open meadow, with cattle grazing in summer and plenty of birdlife all year.

Gainsborough's House

The birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough houses the largest collection of his work anywhere in the world, alongside changing exhibitions, a print workshop and a peaceful walled garden.

Theatre, arts and live music

The Quay Theatre beside the river hosts plays, comedy, music and cinema screenings. Sudbury Arts Centre and St Peter's Church on Market Hill also host concerts, markets and community events through the year.

Eat and drink locally

Between Market Hill, Friars Street and North Street you will find independent cafes, bakeries, traditional pubs and restaurants - many of them listed in this directory.

Day trips to the villages

Lavenham is one of the best preserved medieval wool towns in England, with crooked timber framed houses and the National Trust's Lavenham Guildhall. Long Melford has a long, handsome high street, antique shops, Holy Trinity Church and two country houses - Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall.

Clare offers a country park built around the remains of its castle, while Bures and Boxford make lovely stops on a gentle drive or cycle through the Stour Valley.
