Sudbury community contacts, councils and village halls

Who looks after what - Sudbury Town Council, parish councils, Babergh and Suffolk councils, village halls and essential services.

Which council does what

Sudbury Town Council looks after local matters such as the town's events, open spaces, allotments and the Town Hall. Babergh District Council handles planning, bin collections, council tax and housing. Suffolk County Council is responsible for roads, schools, libraries and social care.

Parish councils

Each of the surrounding villages - including Long Melford, Lavenham, Great Cornard, Glemsford, Bures, Boxford, Clare, Acton, Great Waldingfield and Little Waldingfield - has its own parish council. They are the first port of call for village matters such as footpaths, play areas, village greens and local planning comments, and most publish meeting dates and clerk contact details online.

Village halls and community spaces

Most villages in the district have a village hall run by a local committee or charity. They host clubs, classes, parties, markets and polling stations, and many can be hired at reasonable rates. The parish council or the hall's own noticeboard is usually the best way to find booking details.

In Sudbury itself, church halls, the Arts Centre and leisure venues offer space for groups and events.

Libraries

Sudbury Library is part of Suffolk Libraries, offering book loans, computers, children's activities and community information. Several villages are served by mobile library visits.
